Since players with losing hand want to avoid exposing their hands first during showdown which would give advantageous information to the other players, there is a rule in poker games regarding revealing of cards at showdown which states that the last player who had betted or raised during the game must be the first one to expose his hands. Alternately, the player seated left to the dealer button is asked to begin card revealing at showdown.

Incase a game is played with a side pot, those players involved in competition for the side pot are required to reveal their cards before the player who has gone all-in and is playing only for the main pot. Sometimes, to speed up gameplay, poker players are encourage to display their winning hands as soon as they have determined they hold such a hand.

Sometimes on suspicion of collusion or other forms of cheating, a poker player can put in a request to view his opponent’s hand is it was eligible for showdown, regardless whether the hand has been mucked or not. This privilege is required by players to be used discreetly as calling for an opponent’s hand to be viewed without suspecting foul play can make a player be cautioned by the dealer or altogether prohibited from the game. That is why nowadays casino houses limits the number of times a player can request to view a mucked losing hand at showdown. Some casino houses do not recognize a player’s right to see mucked hands but if suspicion of cheating by collusion is formally expressed to the management such a right can be conditionally allowed by the house rules.

Since most players opt to fold their losing hands rather than dragging them till showdown, it can encourage the tactics of call-bluff. If a player habitually bluffs but folds before showdown, another player can take the advantage of calling this player’s last bet even with an inferior hand than the bluffing player, since the bluffer would always fold and not take the game to showdown.

A very important concept in all poker games is the showdown. It is not required in all games as even before the final round of betting has taken place or at the conclusion of the last betting round, all but one player quits the game by folding their hands. In that case, the last player remaining wins the pot unchallenged. If however, two or more players remain in had even when the last betting round is over and all players have received their full quota of cards, then showdown takes place. It consists of all players competing for the pot revealing their hands which are compared for their value and the winner or winners are determined according to the rules of the poker variant being played.

Many variations in the games of poker do not require the players to use all the cards dealt to him in order to form his final hand. However, players are required to reveal all the cards they possess on the game table with the faces turned up, whether or not they are used in his final hand. This rule is essential because during showdown the card speak regulation is more binding than the players’ claims or declaration, which may be done mistakenly or in trying to mislead deliberately. So in showdown only the value of the cards actually held by the player in his hand is taken into consideration and any mis-statement is ignored.

Sometimes a situation occurs in showdown that players are unwilling to reveal their hands if they know they are holding a losing hand as this information will be beneficial for the other players in the game table. To conceal their weak hands from being revealed before all opponents have exposed their hands, such players often resort to mucking their losing hands during showdown.

In poker games, some variation of pay has a phase of game which is known as rollout or roll ‘em out. Although it has some similarities with roll your own situation, the two are distinctly different and using them synonymously is wrong.

Those poker games which are played with a rollout stage differs from stud poker games in both game play rule and strategies as all the players are dealt up cards with sometimes an option for a drawing card stage. This allows the players to know their hand value at the earliest stage of the game and this knowledge of strength of the hand affects betting action. The only point of similarity with stud poker is that revealing of the cards to the players takes place one by one as each round of betting progresses.

Variation of the rollout poker games depends on at what time the players are permitted to select which cards they intend to expose. If played according to choose before, the players are required to organize their cards in order before any betting action. Otherwise, players can start betting action and in subsequent rounds make their choice of cards taking into account the information received from preceding rounds of play. If played according to choose after, rollout can either be at the same time or done in turn by the players.

A case in point is the game of show five played according to simultaneous choose-after rollout. Here each layer receives seven cards before any betting action and this is followed by five rounds of betting. Each betting round is opened by the players revealing one of their cards at the same time. In high/low split poker games rollout is a frequent phase of play and the players’ choice of cards to be revealed is done strategically to conceal their intention of which half of the pot they are intending to play for winning.

In poker games, especially in the stud poker variant of the game, certain set of rules may become applicable in gameplay and one such rule set is called roll your own. Normal stud poker games require players to be dealt their cards either as hole cards or face up cards, according to which variation is being played and this s followed by betting action. However, if a roll your own stud poker game, the normal gameplay is varied in three possible manners.

If the game is played according to simultaneous choose-after, each player who would usually be dealt an up card instead receives a hole card. All participating players can look at all of the hole cards and select one of them to be turned up followed by all players turning their selected cards simultaneously.

If the game is played according to in turn choose-after, the game begins with each player receiving one hole card. Now one player, chosen to act first according to the regulation of that particular game, turns over the up card he wishes followed by his neighbor who uses this information to make his own choice of which card to turn up and this situation is followed by the remaining players in turn.

If the game is played according to choose-before, it is invariable played in turn and in the round of dealing where up cards are to be dealt, every participant has the choice of receiving his card as an up card or as a hole card. If he wants to receive his card as an up card, he declares so. If he wants to be dealt a hole card, he must turn one of his hole cards face up, o that the total number of hole cads and up cards of each player remains constant. Interestingly, when this method is followed, dealing does not stat from the player seated left to the dealer. Rather the player with the highest hand that is showing gets the dealing round rolling.

Ring games or cash games or live action games of poker attract a large number of players and if the games are being played for no limit, any player may pay a huge buy-in amount and build up a chip stack of considerable size giving him an outright advantage in the play. With the game continuing for an indefinite period, such huge chip stack are not encouraged to be built up by any player. To make it binding some casino houses stipulates a maximum buy-in amount so that no player can build up too large a chip stack. However, in limit poker ring games, such rules are not required as by virtue of being a ring game, the betting limits are already capped to the highest possible amount and players cannot build up an advantageously high chip stack.

Casino houses can either enforce a pot rake or a time rake for ring poker games. If it is a pot rake, then the casino starts charging when the pot size reaches a certain value and the flop is shown. Those houses that take a time rake, players at the game table are required to pay an amount to the casino for every half hour of playing.

Ring or cash poker games have become so popular with players and spectators that they also get broadcast rights in the television and may be played for extremely high stakes. One such live action poker game is Big Game, which allows an assortment of poker game variants to be played by choice by the participating players for limit or no limit, and requires the minimum buy-in value of $80,000.

An important point to note regarding ring games is that it also applies to other games besides poker and may include any card or non-card games played with gambling activity. An example would be multi-player pool game where participants join and leave the game of picket billiards either according to their wish or as long as their luck and billfold would allow them to continue.
